They shut it when it snows and the road becomes dangerous. I got turned back from there once, 'Oh, that's the A66 I kept hearing about on the travel reports'.

I also was disappointed not to see it closed by mountain Giants.

I've been over the A66 once but never noticed the snow gates. Though when in the area, yet still tens of miles away, I've seen the overhead gantries on the motorways announcing the closure of the A66.

There's also striped poles alongside the road further up, presumably to show where the edge is when it's covered in snow.

Oddly there don't seem to be any gates at the other side of the summit. I'm guessing the p*lice close the road at the Brough bypass junction instead.
