My back garden has marigolds, love-in-a-mist, buttercups, granny's bonnets, irises and honesty. I sowed the marigolds and LIAM years ago, and they've just auto-seeded since then. All the others just appeared.

Glorious again. A question to those who live in suburbia or have previously, would I enjoy it? Would you recommend it? I think I might enjoy a large garden to turn into an Eden.

I'm not sure my area qualifies as suburbia, it's more the outer bit of town. Edwardian terraces, you know the sort of thing. It is nice having a garden if you've got the time to look after it. While I'm fond of mine, it is a chore to keep it maintained.

I think it really depends on the suburb and housing style, I don't think I could ever live back where I first grew up, even though its only a couple km away. To this day it still feels very parochial and curtain twitchy.

I'm not really that keen on where I'm currently based either (the house, street and neighbourhood) but I am very fortunate to have a decent outside layout, it's got somewhat better public transport than my old ends, and I'm at an age where walking or cycling isn't an issue. If I lived even just a km away closer to town I would be very content.

London-wise I think it'd largely be a case of the ease/difficulty of getting into central/inner London. I think you probably would get bored at some point but I suppose boredom in and of itself is a mindset that comes and goes; if you're able to get into central London in under 30-40 minutes from your door, and your local high street/neighbourhood has enough amenities and things on your checklist to keep you happy I think you'd like it. You have more first-hand experience as to which suburbs are probably too much on the daily mail reading, foreigner hating, curtain twitching, 5 cars in the drive-way side of things than I.

I think if one does go down the suburban route I never saw much point in choosing to live in a house that didn't have a 'decent' sized garden as you might be trading the benefits of a more central location for absolutely nothing.

Great replies packed with info there.

I've always said that being so close to the park, as well as having formal residents gardens, and a private terrace of my own means I have it better than people in houses - no grass cutting necessary. But lately I've been thinking about the wonders of a beautiful private garden, perhaps with features I could never have in town - a pool, different levels, lots of different flowers in bloom year round.

The only suburbs I like are Hampstead and Richmond. There are a couple of others I don't mind but they quickly slide into the category you flag as a red one. Sean lives in Ruislip and suggested Pinner or Northwood as areas I might like to set up a family home with him in. He was quickly disabused of the notion. It's a very hard no to the whole of Middlesex. I'd be house hunting in Croydon before choosing that fate.

I know. It's a fearful place. He lives in a converted garage with an upstairs added, all tacked on to the side of his brothers house.

I mean look at the state of this...

They have the cheek to declare the 'galleried entrance hall' to be 'magnificent'. There's an electricity pylon practically in the front garden.

That property is considerably grander than the 30s semi in Ruislip in which I slept off an acid session with my friend X in 1989.

That sounds absolutely dreadful as experiences go.

This is much better - a vast garden to have enormous fun with, a utility room to be converted to serve as his daughters bedroom, two other bedrooms, and a master with potential to redo the adjoining cupboards as a steam room/en suite, and decently sized dressing room.

I like the dining room which isn't a currently a dining room (I'm presuming it's the one with the guitars), with attractive door to the outside. The master bedroom could also take a French window straight into the garden. Imagine how gorgeous the garden could be...

Supposedly, it's 18 degrees.

There is no way it's only 18 degrees. rant
