Oh dear. There but for the grace of God go us all. I'm no stranger to hard times myself - when I left my husband I checked into a hotel that several years later I saw featured on a website devoted to 'the worst toilets in the world'. I wouldn't have gone quite that far myself, but it remains one of only two establishments I've had a screaming match with the owner in *. The only thing that cheered me up at the time was after showering (with a shower head that had to be held by hand, handy wall hooks not being part of the decor), I'd appear on the balcony which overlooked a busy and quite appreciative construction site. My hairdryer had packed up so I did actually need the air.

I think you should do something more special for your friend than grouting her tiles.

*The other was in Mexico City where a delegation was sent to my door to tell me I couldn't entertain guests in my own room at night. It seemed an ideal opportunity to point out that it was just as well I'd had cause to straighten the sheets out myself because the underside was frayed. My request for the bill to be adjusted to account for this resulted in a serious escalation of hostilities (on both sides I do admit). I checked out within the hour - but not before a full cash refund was given to me. The next hotel was much nicer in all respects so it worked out for the best in the end.
