Joni or Moni?

This is a perfect example of the brilliance of her open tuning style.
The deft plasticity and serpentine dynamic is almost uncanny.

Ageing and self-delusion.

This is why people like Miles Davis and Mingus rated her above all other white mainstream artists.

This is quite Wendy Carlos-esque.

Re: Joni Mitchell - The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975)
It is over.
It wasn't my kind of thing. It was too jazz-chordtastic, melodically unfocused and rhythmically irregular for my liking but she has a nice voice and clearly put a lot of work into writing enough words to fill the songs up with.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everybody else made of it.

In context to the albums before and after this it represents a kind of finale to the smooth, jazzy narratives of the few previous years but doesn't really presage the cool confidence of Hejira ('76).
Hejira I would, BTW, say is in many and most respects, her greatest album.
In all of them.
In truth.

I think the only mid 70s laid back sophisticated American thingy I like is Neil Young Young.
Not sure he counts.

I think that that's one of the most unfair overall scores an album's had so far.
