On my little dansette in 1992, it didn't sounds so much like the Boomtown Rats rocking out.

The album's replete with portraits of occasionally frightening London/Home Counties grotesques.
None of them based in fantasy, but in scurvy fact.

It is over.
It started out well but, by the end, it was all falling apart a bit, even though the later tracks suited his vocal limitations better.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everybody else made of it.

Hmm..
I was thinking this was going to be a solid ★★★★★, but having heard it, the session Musicians going punk and well, being muso over everything, combined with one of thenastiest petty most un-nice lyrics, hmm...

A psycho-geographically and culturally important album.
I was born grew up in London and it captures and mirrors something at the edges of my youth.
I maintain that the way the album suddenly switches 2/3rds of the way through from groovy, elegiac, gentle, wistful to raucously noisome and lyrically viciously misanthropic is actually brilliant.

BTW, I went to lunch with Ian Dury in his flat by Hammersmith Bridge when I was 19.
He later said something very complimentary about me.
Please let me know if I've told this story before.

I think Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick is the earliest song I can actually remember, from anything like the time it was new, so to speak.
It seem so raucous. As the time. well, it was over 40 years ago, lol.
I went ★★★★.
