Re: Painting and decorating
As far as I can tell at this stage it has gone a lot better this time.
I used a different technique - rather than painting vertical strips one brush wide, I painted 2ft squares at a time, and did vertical strips of those
squares if you see what I mean.

This afternoon I first-coated the lower portion of the wall below the dado rail, using the same technique. It looks OK. I think it will just need one more coat instead of two.

Re: Painting and decorating
I have now second-coated the lower portion. It looks good.

Re: Painting and decorating
Thank you for your expert advice.
I think the reason the first two coats on the first wall went wrong was the one-brush-wide stripes. They were so long that by the time I got onto the next stripe, I'd lost the wet edge on the previous one.
The squares technique fixed that - I got it out of the Collins Complete DIY Manual that I'd forgotten I had.

Re: Painting and decorating
Having checked it in daylight I think one more coat would be the thing. Then the top and bottom portions will both have had 3 coats.

Re: Painting and decorating
I have finished painting.
If it doesn't work out this time then it'll just have to stay like it is

Re: Painting and decorating
I've put the bookcases back against the freshly painted wall. I must say it does look nice now, I almost regret that it will be the buyer and not me who gets most of the benefit.

Also, when you finally hand over the keys, the new owners will say, with a dismissive wave of the hand, "of course all of this is going to be painted over".
