Holy or Holey?
Re: Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (1973)
I think that it's this song that stopped me from going right back to Our Price and haggling with the chippy staff about a refund.

John Bonham's charming yokel voice.

Why do I get the impression I know exactly how the rest of this song will sound like?

This sounds like a reject from LZIV/'Symbols'.

But with LZ that's a good thing surely.
Riff heavy, brontosaurus drums, Plant squawking...

Plant's vocals work on this one.
Also Bonzo's drums.
Some kick-drum pyrotechnics.

Tedious artsy-fartsy, bubblegum, boogie-woogie ending though.
Just to spoil it all.

I just don't like the Zeppelin groove, it's got no swing to it, I think its the drummer trying to hit everything harder than everything else that does it. They should have got Ringo in on this.

It is over.
It was an album that did a lot but not for any noticeable purpose. There was too much guitar and too little coherence.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everybody else made of it.

An absolutely terrible album that.
3 or 4 good songs - more than many albums can manage in truth - but as an album (i.e. an encapsulated, historically significant document or concept or even vaguely coherent piece of art) an utter debacle.
Insulting even.
LZ can go and do one for this dreck.

Re: Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (1973)
I remember listening to a large collection of Zeppelin songs, was it that remastered thing with the crop circles on it? Anyway, I remember liking about 1 in 6 songs. I think it's been the same ever since. They also drag everything out too long, things like that Rock and Roll track on presence would have been fine as a 2 and half minute novelty thing, but had to drag it out to over 5 minutes.
