It's easy to forget geographically how far north this country is.
I've just checked and Thurso's at almost exactly the same latitude as the state capital of Alaska, Juneau.

I wonder if my Mum knows that too?
D'you know, I'll ask her...

I've seen American expats in London warning their compatriots about our wildly varying day lengths.

I got that joke about 30 years before you even said it.
In fact, I seem to remember it was me who made up that joke.

Re: Which seaside towns have you been too?
I remember feeling incredibly frightened on the way to Lerwick. The fact that there was nothing beyond that, just straight up to an ice cap and over the hill to North Korea, felt very lonely. I was on the deck looking at the pitch black ocean, it was like a magnet to me. I was wondering what it might be like to jump over and should the alarm be raised, how long it would take them to stop and find me. Would they ever find me, even if I was on the surface? Would they even bother with such a pointless detour? I felt like the loneliest and coldest person on the planet.
Coupled with my Titanic/Estonia/Free Enterprise horror compulsion, I believe it was the worst journey of my life, and I can only hope that remains the case. It was absolutely dreadful.
