I think it's to divide the two directions in the right hand lane - beyond the lozenge the street is one-way and the right-hand lane is for traffic going the way we're looking, and on 'our' side it's two-way and the right-hand lane is for traffic coming towards us.

If you drive backwards from the viewpoint, and look carefully at the car park entrance on the right where the motorbike is, you can see there have been some alterations. You obviously used to be able to get into the car park that way - hence the fierce combination of No Entry and Road Closed signs. So I think the mystery lozenge is connected to that too.

Actually, if you go back to Jun 2016 on the selector, you'll see that I'm right about the car park bowtie

. And the road is entirely one-way.

I hazard a guess that the old system caused traffic jams because traffic turning right out of the car park was crossing traffic turning right into the car park.
