Well, I personally think that that's a very lovely and quietly spirited triumph.
Not an epic by most accounts, but proof that Midlake are a band that, despite their hipster trappings, are a throwback to a finer, more noble age of music-making.
It lacks the lyrical and baroque esotericism of the Tim Smith era of course, but it's an immersive and warmly melancholic experience created by a group of musicians who'd been effectively abandoned by the guy that did all of their thinking for them (and, barring a guest song here or there on other people's albums, who hasn't done a thing in the last 8+ years).
