The semi-finals are to whittle the number of entrants down to a manageable size before the final. Otherwise, there'd be about 50 songs in the final.

The semi-finals are always on the Tuesday and Thursday before the final on the Saturday and normally get shown here on BBC Four, with much less fanfare than the final on BBC One. I think the semi-finals began in something like 2004. It looks like BBC One will be broadcasting them all next year.

Of course, it should be attached to all mentions and any publicity. It would also be quite nice if Liverpool asked the government to make the venue officially Ukraine for the evening, as has been done, for instance, when an heir to a throne has been born in exile. After that is achieved, Liverpool need not be mentioned at all, except in passing as a statement of geographical fact should that need clarification.

Of course, it should go without saying but sadly can't and hasn't, that this process has been tacky in the extreme, and was not a suitable occasion for any kind of 'levelling up' nonsense, or for glory seeking competitive publicity between British cities. That should've been rammed home to any party involved.

This is not an opportunity for a jolly, but a sad favour for a people currently undergoing arguable genocide.

The whole jockeying for position has been shameful. Stolen valour is rank cowardice.

Not to mention, Liverpudlians themselves will be expected to distract themselves with this circus (without bread - the other half of the equation) instead of being encouraged to publicize how many of them are increasingly freezing and/or starving, while falling into addiction, despair, disrepair, poverty, and crime.

John Lydon, the former Sex Pistols frontman, has failed in his bid to represent Ireland at Eurovision.

The 67-year-old had hoped his song Hawaii, about his wife Nora who lives with Alzheimer's, would be chosen "to bring awareness" to the disease.

Instead the band Wild Youth was chosen to fly the Irish flag at the song contest in Liverpool in May.
