20/20 or Monsieur Myope?

Nightjar wrote:Well, as is the case with all of these 'Brian retreats to his sandpit' albums - where the band lost their de facto leader but were left with loads of songs that were supposed to be on SMILE and the burgeoning songwriting talent of Dennis Wilson - AND Mike Love's overweening desires to make the band more like they were in 1963 (when he was the lead singer and all the songs were about surfing or cars) AND Al Jardine just wanting to do cheerful 'downhome' covers and Bruce Johnston just hanging around like a fart in a space-suit...
It was amazing!!

Well, no, obviously it wasn't.
It was instead a typical mess of a hash featuring mediocrity, half-arsedness, individuality, genuine weirdness and powerfully, ethereally brilliant songs that were scattered without a great deal of thought throughout.
I speak as one of those inveterate BB-Bores of course, but it can't be overestimated what a shambles the band were at this time.
Along with this album - and the two-or-so chronologically either side - you get the same car crash of elements.
Honestly, they struggled to cobble together albums long enough to be demoted to EP status.
