I knew they usually started from the Town Hall end, but Breaking Learning Alert:

Odd numbers are usually assigned to the left side of the street and even numbers to the right side, usually heading out of the town centre from the town hall or other civic building

I think I should have worked that out by now…

That is true for the street I grew up in.

But not for the one where my last house was, when I had a house.

There's probably some kind of underlying principle to the numbering of houses on a street in London, but I think that when the city mushroomed throughout the 1800s and all the towns and villages began to merge it all went out the window.

However, now I think of it, ~~the street my Mum lives on~~ my Mum's street, as it radiates outwardly from the recognised city centre, does have the even numbers on the right side. gasp
