E-readers
I have used the long service award gift money I was given to buy two e-readers, one Kobo and one Kindle.
Both of them were misleadingly advertised - the Kindle had ads on it and the Kobo was (apparently) a low-end one which didn't have the ability to copy stuff from Google Drive or Dropbox. Those features only come with the expensive Kobos. The only way to put your own files onto this one is via the USB cable. It's like a mid-2000s MP3 player for books.
On the plus side, when I went online to pay £10 to have the ads removed from the Kindle, it didn't work, and a nice Amazon chatperson removed them for free.
And I discovered there are quite a few free Gutenberg books in the Kobo store if you look hard enough. Those were the ones I wanted in the first place.

Re: E-readers
In the olden days, it used to be possible to read ebooks on normal laptops and tablets. I don't know if it still is.

Further issues with the Kobo, btw, is that it doesn't work with Pocket articles because of 'intermittent problems'.
And it doesn't work with the library book access because of 'a problem with your account standing. Please contact your library.'

Re: E-readers
I hurried down to the library so as to be there when it opened at 9, and sorted out the problem.
But then I discovered that their ebook selection is rubbish, it's all graphic novels and public domain stuff that I could get anywhere.
