What do you call this type of bread?
As Fangy has pointed out, different people have different names for the below item.

But what do you call the domed, yeasty wheat treat that refuses to die?

It is a multiple choice poll, for those of mixed heritage.

I call them cobs but I've noticed that most people of my acquaintance call them baps.

Here is a map that shows which names dominate in which parts of the UK.

Re: What do you call this type of bread?
I use 'bread roll' as the generic word.
Now, of those other options, some of them are local terms for a generic bread roll, some of them are national or local terms for a specific kind of roll.
Local general terms
batch
National specific terms
bap (a light roll for putting a burger in)
dinner roll (a very light roll, often a bit sweet, yuck)
Local specific terms
buttery (an eastern Scottish roll with lots of fat, a bit like a savoury croissant)
morning roll (Scottish chewy, yeasty roll)
I'm not sure about 'cob', some people, like Wendi, use it to mean any roll, whereas if I said 'cob' I'd mean a crusty roll.
Interestingly, I bought 4 bread rolls this morning, to have for my tea tomorrow. Delicious dense crusty wholemeal rolls, which Sainsburys choose to call 'rustic'.

That map is wildly inaccurate by the way. I grew up in Essex and the first time I ever saw anyone call a bread roll a 'Vienna' was 30 seconds ago, when I saw that map.

Re: What do you call this type of bread?
Basically the entire concept of this thread is gravely, hopelessly, fatally flawed.
Bap, bun, bread roll.
Cob up north.
Vienna, indeed.

Re: What do you call this type of bread?
That is very true.
The picture Wendi posted immediately had me confused cos it looks very close textured and so I wasn't sure how big the 'rolls' were.
My immediate thought was they were proper-size loaves of sourdough.

Also, the crust looks either hard and crunchy or soft like banana bread.
Or something.
Or something.

Re: What do you call this type of bread?
To me, a cob is more crusty and hard than a soft bread roll/bun.
A bap sounds a bit... common, something you'd have in a greasy spoon with plastic table cloths.
But likely oh so delicious at the same time.
"Wud ya lark the baircon bap, duck?"
