Re: Castles
I used to love Castle Park and its old-fashioned municipal flower beds.

Re: Castles
I saw Colchester Castle last month in passing and the grounds did look nice and traditionally colourful, like something out of a 1950s 3D View Master.

As we’ve heard already, something much more interesting was demolished for this municipal fakery masquerading as real tradition. Sums Britain up. There can’t be any country on earth more in thrall to notions of ‘are history’ which are no such thing.
We’re trapped in a world the Victorians invented, ignorant of everything further back unless it comes in Tudor form, held back from progressing forward in case it knocks the Victoriana off balance, despite them being some of the greatest vandals known.
See also that stinking pit known as the Houses of Parliament. I was amused - in a despairing way - to see the Vigil of the Princes is no older than the Edwardian era. You’d think it was at least medieval considering the reverence with which it was talked of.
Not history, just cosplay.

And yet they let it go to ruin only to build a gated development down the road with some of it. A genuinely interesting landmark, reduced to providing building materials for a ‘castle’ with Range Rovers on the tarmac. That looks like something you’d find in Ohio.

My estimation of him has gone right down.
