I must confess that, apart from the tracks on a certain album, and all the songs that have gone to Number One this year, I don't think I've heard any new songs this year.

However, the biggest revelation for me this year was discovering Paul McCartney's 1882, a song from the early 1970s that he's never got round to recording. The live version was supposed to be on Red Rose Speedway but was dropped when it was decided to not make it a double album.

When you think of some of the cobblers he's released over the years, it's baffling why he's never thought this was worthy of release.

I also heard his unreleased 1987 song Return to Pepperland for the first time. I'd never listened to it because I'd assumed it was going to be some pseudo-Beatley fiasco. When I finally got round to listening to it, it turned out to sound nothing like the Beatles and to possess some of his most charming lyric writing.

I also stumbled across Back to the Green by Marshall Hain, which is like a fusion of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Sky Blue by Pilot. It mostly impressed me because, only ever having heard one song by them before, I had no idea she had such a good voice or that he was quite so stylish on the joanna.

The only newly released songs that I've liked this year have been by Macca. And my favourite of those was Frank Sinatra's Party. music

My favourite old song that I've heard for the first time this year was, as I've recently alluded to elsewhere, The Words of Aaron by The Move.

Nope, I've not heard anything better. That's brilliant, even moment is perfect, the lyrics powerful, the flow of the Ukrainian, the break at the end, all perfect. And anyone who disagrees is simply wrong.
