cosmictanya wrote:Why is there a metal block gate across the street? I wouldn't like that.
It's a street of brothels.
It has metal walls at either end with discreet sidewaysy entrances.
Traditionally, under 18s (obviously) and women were unofficially banned - also anyone who was a rubbernecker.
The women being banned part may have changed now, but traditionally anyone immediately identified as not seriously interested in genuine 'trade' would have crap and all thrown out the windows on them.

Re: Moving house
Women banned? That's unreal. In other German cities, brothels are fairly open, and usually have very reasonably priced drinks. Convenient for starting the night, or when staggering back from one. The brothels in Berlin all seemed to be run by Belorussians in bad leather jackets, but I always found them friendly enough.

Re: Moving house
I went up to it and almost went in, but I actually chickened out.
In truth - and I'm really not bullsh*tting - the thing that veered me away at the last moment was a sense that it was wrong to just gawp as a teenage tourist for a few minutes when actual business is going on.
That and the supposed threats of being drenched in p*ss.

Twas true.
Perhaps it still is.
Perhaps it remains a strictly hetero zone.
Y'know, keep things simple - no haggling of arguments between the pros and punters (Herbertstraße is for straight men and women alone).
I'm pretty sure that other tastes are catered for nearby.

Re: Moving house
Hmm, more complex it seems...

21st century
In September 2005, the Energy Hamburg radio station was fined 10,000 euros for having made a "Live Morning aus der Herbertstraße" in March, the content of which was criticized for inappropriate sexual practices and offers of prostitution. During the show there were several interviews between two journalists and two prostitutes in Herbertstraße, the prostitutes reporting in detail their practices.
In 2013, Sasha Grey and Mariya Ocher crashed the gates. In December 2015, Hamburg police handed out flyers at the entrances to Herbertstraße warning male visitors of the prostitutes' tricks including charging excessive amounts for supposed sexual services.
On 8 March 2019, International Women's Day, members of the feminist activist group FEMEN removed the metal gates keeping Herbertstraße out of public view. The group said that the protest was against the sexual exploitation of women, trafficking and sexual violence, and the fact that the street is inaccessible to women.

Re: Moving house
Yes, I can understand. The red light district in Amsterdam is very unsettling. It's just a grubby and revolting experience to walk through it if you're going somewhere in the area, or to get from A to B.
I'll always remember standing waiting for a nightbus, in London, while two lairy guys talked about their recent trip to Amsterdam, joked about all the details, reminisced about the hookers they'd picked.
It was just me and a much older woman standing there, about 3am or so. She looked like she was off to a cleaning job perhaps. We caught each other's eye, and exchanged a look of complete solidarity.

OK, I know who Sasha Grey is (obvz), but Mariya Ocher's a new one on my radar.
Interesting...

Ridiculous nanny statism. Buyer beware. When short on money I used to round up a few City businessmen or tourists in Mayfair and take them to be rinsed by a few clubs I knew. Westminster Sh*tty Council closed them all down in the end.
Quite right the gates should come down. People should see it. It's a valid position to be in favour of prostitution in that format - plenty of reasonable arguments for it, but none for tidying it out of sight. If you want it, fine, but that's what it looks like.
The idea of throwing a literal cordon sanitaire around a group of women seems fundamentally dehumanizing to me. I find that very sad. Retrograde. All for the benefit of everyone but those hidden away. And what's 'excessive' anyway?

The Tascheles used to be really great. No idea what it's like now.
'In April 2009, she organized The Queens and The Rebels (of Unpopular Culture) Festival for theatrical music/performance art and multimedia at the legendary Tacheles complex in Berlin. The second edition of the festival was held on April 18, 2010, at the RAW Temple, Berlin.'

Re: Moving house
The removal people phoned me just now to confirm our date on Tuesday.
'You mean Monday,' I said...
Originally they sent me a 3 day schedule:
Day 1 Departure
Day 2 Collection
Day 3 Arrival at warehouse
and said 'Collection day Monday 4th'.
But what they meant was 'Departure day Monday 4th'.
This is so frustrating because I'd planned this whole weekend around getting up at 4am Monday, and now it's too late to change it so I'll have to add an extra 4am start on Tuesday.

I've kind of lost confidence in them now.

Re: Moving house
Can't you just call them up, tell them where they'll find the key, and tell them to keep the noise down and do your bedroom last because you'll still be in there resting? Also instruct that when they do come in, they are to bring a cup of tea and some toast to you, and take the actual bed out last of all, giving you time to get out of it.

Re: Moving house
I say just stay in the bed and when they move it let them carry/drive you to your new place.

Re: Moving house
Well, firstly they're moving my stuff out of the storage place in Essex, and secondly, the bed has been dismantled for a year.
They could carry me in my armchair, above their heads like an empress

Do you need to be there? Just send them the keys and let them get on with it?

Re: Moving house
I've always wondered about that. The next time I move house, could I just go away on holiday and leave the removal people to it?

A palanquin.
It is called an palanquin.
Last night, again
You were in my dreams
Several expendable limbs were at stake
You were a prince, spinning rims
All sentiments Indian-given and half-baked
I was brought in on a palanquin
Made of the many bodies of beautiful women
Brought to this place to be examined
Swaying on an elephant a princess of India
