Steely Dan or Greasy Flan?
Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill (1972)
Steely Dan's debut album.
I chose this because, although it's not their best or most mature album, it has a very strong, stylistic spread of songs.
IMHO it's very very good.
They'd top it at a later date in ways and styles and at moments, but it's an astonishing opening salvo from possibly the most smugly brilliant bunch of Yanks ever convened.
Noo-Yawk, by way of California and the US college milieu...
Ironic and sarcastic, but musically serious (unlike 10cc).

I'm assuming the title is a reference to It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry.

Link me to a song on it and I'll listen to it and opine on whether it's my sort of thing.

The most famous song on Scam is Haitian Divorce and on Thrill either Do It Again or Reelin' in the Years.
Probably the former on balance.
You know them?
Yer?

I always mix them up with Steeleye Span.
One of the two is compared to Tom Bombadil's 'Hey dol, merry dol, ring a ding dillo' word salad, but I don't recall which.
To save time I will conduct a pre-bedtime listen-through to those three songs that you done mentioned.

Re: Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill (1972)
Can't Buy a Thrill is their remarkably mature debut album.
The Royal Scam is a proper mature-period album.
The latter has a strangely mysterious Lovecraftian vibe about it for me.
I think it's because of the Royal Pant.
There's a kind of Louisiana element to it too.

'76 was the year of the guitar voice-box.
Frampton, Floyd, Eagles, Dan...
You name it.

Well, Haitian Divorce wasn't outrageously bad, but nor did it tick any of my boxes. I shall now undertake Do It Again.
