Despite his talent he's always sounded angry to the point of toxicity.
Emotionally vindictive.
Menacing.
A bit unsettling.

Featuring one of the greatest string arrangements in history.

The end of that track was a bit of a joke, frankly.

I'm still listening to this.
I've got nothing to say.

The best backing band of all time are Bowie's "Berlin Trilogy" band.
I think Lodger should be the first of the London duo with Scary Monsters.

This is like something from "A Teenage Opera".

So many unnecessary key change flips-and-flops.

Oh, it's fading out.
Just as it got good when he'd stopped singing.

Re: Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom, 1982.
It is over.
That was an album that is consistently excellent from start to finish. Without doubt, one of the great albums of the 1980s.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everyone else made of it.

I have given it 5 stars, as it is almost without fault.

What an unholy mess.
I don't ever envisage myself listening to that album again.
EC is talented.
He's written a fair few outstanding songs and deserves a lot of the acclaim he receives.
Personally I don't mind his voice, but can understand if others don't.
Still, that was a jittery when it should've been smooth and flabby when it should tight.
Lyrically I had no time or inclination to engage with what he was saying, but acknowledge that some of it was quite good.
Biting and painfully ironic even.
But...
But, no.
Step away from the microphone Costello, take a deep breath and get over yourself.

Re: Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom, 1982.
There's a tuppeny, hapenny millionaire
Looking for a fourpenny one
With a tight grip on the short hairs
Of the public imagination
But for his private wife and kids somehow
Real life becomes a rumor
Written in a French letters with some dutch courage
And a German sense of humour
He's got a mind like a sewer
And a heart like a fridge
He stands to be insulted
And he pays for the privilege
To murder my love is a crime
But will you still love
A man out of time?
He lyrics are just the same as the music, overwritten and underwritten at the same time.
Just so clever isn't it? Did you get all the references?
I'm not giving this a rating.
