Joan Armatrading or "Groan! Hopes-are-fading"?
Re: Joan Armatrading - Joan Armatrading (1976)
The Call of the Wendigo wrote:These lyrics seem a little... ...dodgy...
"I was going home to Hayes one night, and there was this boy. He was only young, 18 or whatever. I was waiting for the train and he was doing circles around me. When I get into the train, I was the only one in the compartment. And up comes this little lad, takes off his hat, saying, 'Can I sit by you, please.' I said, 'All right, then,' and we chat. Then I get off at my stop. And he says, 'I get off here, too. I work around the corner. Can I walk you to your door?' Well, he does, and he obviously doesn't want to go, so I ask him in for a cup of coffee. I play a record and give him an apple or something, and I ask him to go off to work. And that was it. That's all that happened. But the song is about what I knew was in his mind. His name was Donald."

It's a beautiful track but it does seem to ultimately go nowhere.

But it does.
It goes to the end.
It's kind of orchestral.
It meanders and then ties up elegantly with the strings.

Oh, no it doesn't.
It just sort of fades away.

For an album by some bint with a guitar it's pretty good all this.

God only knows why I'm surprised.
Joni Mitchell's virtually my alpha and omega.

She does veer worryingly close to Cleo Laine vocal territories on occasion.

This is like the album I've got. It's all quality but, overall, it's very dull.

Also, I keep expecting every track to turn into Phoebe Snow''s version of Every Night.

In some ways it's a bit like Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake it's far too overproduced than you'd imagine for the songs.
Unlike that album, this doesn't kill it.

This is quite a good little honky tonk number.
If, er, you know what I mean...
