Joan Armatrading or "Groan! Hopes-are-fading"?
Re: Joan Armatrading - Joan Armatrading (1976)
Hah!
Nearly half of the mid-'70s Fairport Convention line up are on this album.
It's Jerry Donahue on guitar and Mattocks on drums.

Dave Mattocks played drums on Nikita by Elton John.

Funnily enough I had Fairport's album "9" on standby for this forum.
That's got Mattocks and Jerry Donahue on.

This isn't a album to play in the daylight is it?

The moment I type that, it livens up.

Yes, Jerry Donahue's Telecaster sound.
It all makes sense now.

Looking at Discogs, the band is incredible.
The bassist is Dave Markee.

I keep calling him Mattocks.

Well, it was far richer/more produced than I was expecting, some of the songs were good, but…
It's music for grown-up isn't it?
Dinner parties and all that jazz.

It is over.
It is an album which reinforced my pre-existing belief that she's an easier artist to admire than she is to actually enjoy.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everyone else made of it.

Background music for a nice game of Canasta.
Whatever that is.

Well, that started very very well.
It kept it up for a good while.
It then faltered.
It then fell back on some slightly predictable musical tropes.
Finally it succumbed to the brilliantly polished session band.
Thus, it ultimately flattered to deceive.
A shame.
A singer-songwriter like JA should instead stick to her guns on principle and eschew accomplished, tactically assembled by the record label backing bands and carry on strumming to sparsely populated halls in provincial towns...

It's a bit like British Bulldog, but everyone has to wear a sombrero.
