Judging by Census returns, my great grandfather would appear to have been illegitimate and passed off as his grandparents' child, until his parents got married, at which point he was acknowledged to be theirs. gossip

My great grandmother managed to change her birthplace and date of birth on every Census. Sly

Her profession was listed as, "Takes in boarders."

One of the boarders had the exact same name as her later married name and came from the same city, she later claimed to be from. Sly

When my mum was tracing our family history in the 80s, it took her 15 years to get as far as you have in a week. That's the wonder of modern technology.

I only really know my family history back the turn of the last century, on both sides. My great grandmother on my mum's side ended up in a workhouse in Manchester after having my grandfather at a very young age and abandoning him. My grandad found out she eventually ended up in Canada and I think she was still alive when I was a child.

1816 seems to be as far back as I can get.

Before that, nobody seems to have bothered recording births or doing censuses for the poor people.

My family tree features people who were namechecked in a famous diary, the stationmaster at Llandrindod Wells, some people who may or may not have been gypsies, and a man who came home to find that his dad had borrowed his new suit without permission, and was so irked that he left the family home that very day and never spoke to any of his relatives again.

Well that was a torrid couple of hours, even by my mothers standards. It can safely be said that all attempts at social distancing broke down when she swung by on her way from having a bottle of wine on a literal park bench. I've completely lost my voice and now have the sorest throat, along with a fistful of hair on the floor. I'll have the entire neighbourhood on my case due to this - all the way down every flight of stairs, eyeball to eyeball. I was overpowered by the stench of alcohol. The building itself shook when she finally pulled the main door behind her - at one point she seemed to be trying to pull me out onto the doorstep and close my own door on me. The only thing louder was the sound of sash windows all around being flung open.

I've got one a great great one of those. You should check out passenger lists. I've found her listed on fabulous voyages, enviable even by today's standards. Old Bailey or other court records can also be very beautifully detailed - whole transcripts.

By the time this one washed up in South America with her seriocomic act, she was listed as a 34 year old spinster, despite having adult children and a few grandchildren. Probably where my mother gets her penchant for drama.
