The critics were quite at odds concerning this album.

Music critic Paul Williams has called it "the one track [on Slow Train Coming] that must be listened to again and again and again, inexhaustible, essential.

" Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner has called it "nothing less than Dylan's most mature and profound song about America"

It's like a kind of morbid fascination of love and loathing.

I'm not crazy about the production (bit like that Ry Cooder album we did that was the first fully digitally produced album released), but the band can't be faulted.
