Re: The all-new all things driving thread
I only hope I can open the door to drive it to the garage later.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
There's probably a physical keyhole hidden under one of the door handles, that you can use to get into the vehicle in exactly this fob failure situation. Check online for the model to find out exactly where.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
Thanks for the suggestion, but my car does have physical keyholes. The problem when I couldn't get into it yesterday was that the key would turn, but the lock wouldn't open.

Ahh. Well a brick through the window would work, and just get them to fix that at the same time as the rest.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
Luckily it's been checked now. It was the key that was the problem. At my suggestion they took the battery out of the faulty key so that it wouldn't trigger the locking again.
There was a lot of confusion then because the garageman warned me that of course I couldn't open the door with that key. Eventually he said 'Well, of course if you physically put it in the lock and turn it it will work.'
I explained that I always do it that way and never use the key fob, and he looked at me as if I'd said that I sat astride the car roof, whipping it to make it go faster.
Anyway, they didn't charge me a penny, perhaps because they felt sorry for the poor mad Amish/Englishwoman.

I had a similar problem the other day, my key would go in the lock but wouldn't turn (Key fob is broken so can't use remote), as there were no bricks handy I tried it in the passenger door, opened fine, no problem since.Fangirl Three wrote:Thanks for the suggestion, but my car does have physical keyholes. Re: The all-new all things driving thread
This car only has a keyhole in the driver's door.

Well, with the correct use of force it can have one anywhere.

The run around is a bit tired. Confronted with a deflated tyre when I went out earlier, so I had to sit there while the machine that plugs into the lighter did its work over about 15-20 minutes. The cap screw thing was missing, so I sealed it with chewing gum, and off I went.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
I have driven to Darlington today. I'm fed up with the M6, so I've decided to try the eastern route. Tomorrow I will be attempting the A66 traverse in the east-to-west direction for the first time.

Say hi to Barnard Castle.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
I'm going to go back down the A1(M) a bit to Scotch Corner, and take the A66 from there rather than the A67 directly through Barnard Castle. I'm not sure my eyesight is good enough for the latter route.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
Ironically I decided to try the A68 instead, and traverse on the A69, but I got lost and took an unnecessary 10-mile detour around Helen Auckland (Bishop Auckland's wacky sister who shows him up at Church gatherings).

I've yet to venture into the Aucklands, or whatever the local collective name is. It doesn't look the most exciting of places. I've been to Barnard Castle a couple of times and it's fairly pleasant, if a little in the middle of nowhere, though with decent access to the aforementioned trans-Pennine road network.

Most of the A68 was exciting and great, but then I was stuck behind a horse transporter for the last ten miles to the A69.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
I've been reading up on the portion of the A68 that I didn't use, the bit between the A69 and Edinburgh.
https://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/index.php?title=A68/Route
Despite being a single carriageway it sounds quite modern, with overtaking lanes on the hills, rather like the A69. I might try it for my next journey north - go up to Edinburgh and then across to Glasgow.
There's a distinct lack of fuelling opportunities though.

I've been on the A68, in snow.

I liked it. I was going to a hunt in the Borders. Not to hunt, but to socialize. I was given a wonderful room. Lots of whisky drinking by roaring fires. I had to use the A68 to get there and get back. I think of it as a romantic road.
