I remember hearing that circa 1995/96.

Wasn't the kid out of Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind called Danny Goffey?

Re: Breaking learning thread
You can get unlimited data sim-only packages now for £20 a month.

That's less than I pay for my broadband. Should I scrap my broadband and go for mobile only from now on?

Let's see. How much does a sim-free phone cost these days?

Re: Breaking learning thread
You can get a sim-free used Blackberry on Amazon for less than £30.

Would the mobile connection be fast enough though?

You could tether the internets from your old devices so you can still keep using, whatever it is you're already using.
Might be a bit slow though...

Yes, I did that a couple of years ago, for about a week, when I lost my broadband in a storm. It worked quite well.WhatDoesThisButtonDo? wrote:You could tether the internets from your old devices so you can still keep using, whatever it is you're already using.

That is a concern for me when it comes to watching YouTube and the iPlayer. They're the only things I do online that need genuine speed.Fangirl Three wrote:Would the mobile connection be fast enough though?

I have just checked. My broadband has a download speed of 2.6 mbps. 3G is typically 3mbps and 4G is typically 20 mbps.

It does puzzle me how a radio link can be so much faster than copper wire. I'd look up how 4G works but I suspect I wouldn't understand the explanation.

Re: Breaking learning thread
Would you really want to watch films on a mobile phone? That must be a really unpleasant experience.
I had a very heavy and unattractive cold during a holiday in Andalucia once, so I watched that evenings EastEnders on a Blackberry, via YouTube, in bed. It's not a viewing experience I'd seek to relive.
I also can't understand those people who have televisions stuck to the wall, usually above a fireplace. There must be a lot of people with very sore necks these days.

Re: Breaking learning thread
You can connect your phone to your computer and use the phone as a router for it, completely bypassing the need for a broadband connection.
I have a problem that, where I live, it's impossible to get decent broadband. My current service is insanely slow and I've not been able to find any providers who can get it above 3mbps. That's the main reason I'm considering dumping my broadband and going entirely mobile.

All sounds very complicated. Have you considered moving? Why is broadband so terrible in Sheffield? It's a fairly large population centre so surely the demand is there.

Re: Breaking learning thread
I've just this moment been investigating. Apparently, I use 15GB a month. It's possible to get a 30GB mobile deal for £10 a month. As my broadband costs me £22 a month and my PAYG phone costs around £10 a month and my phone line costs £5 a month, if I switch to it, I'd save £27 a month.

I don't know if it's a problem for the whole of Sheffield or if it's just my house that's in the wrong location relative to the exchange.cosmictanya wrote:All sounds very complicated. Sounds great. You can give your provider their marching orders now.
I think my bills are quite high because my mother has been known to let herself in when nobody is here, ring Virgin and say she's me in order to get all sorts of different channels added. I once found her and her boyfriend had made themselves at home and were watching live Italian rugby.
Actually, she's away right now and she has a very nice grey ribbed wool jumper, and a black mohair one that I've admired. I'll get round there when I've got a spare hour.
