My new "30GB a month for £10" sim card has arrived. I'm trying to activate it.

I have a feeling this isn't going to go well.

I am now tethering my laptop to my phone to see how it goes.

It seems to be slightly faster than my landline.

For some reason, though, it's set my laptop's fan off. Why would it do that? Surely, it takes no more effort to send and receive data via a phone than it does through a router?
