I always thought it was when the ball went over the white line on the side of the pitch. Then someone tried to explain it to me and I stopped listening after the first couple of words.

I do understand it, and I think the new stuff about active play is merely a formalisation of the old custom and practice, that there was only an offence if the player who was offside then received the ball and did something that was advantageous to their side.

Btw I think they should go back to 2 points for a win, and allowing the goalie to pick up back-passes, and just having big numbers on shirts. 1981 standards basically.
