The previous occasion was Bruce Springclean in the very late 1980s.

Is it 1984 again?

Re: The Sheffieldshire thread
On my forthcoming journey I will have a bit of extra time to spare and I might take a slight detour into Sheffield as I've only ever been in the city-proper a couple of times, and not for 20ish years. I won't be stopping long but wanted to find a place with a decent view of the city. Is Meersbrook Park worth a brief stop? Or anywhere else easily accessible?
I checked the clean air zone thingy and apparently all cars are exempt, and it's only around the city centre anyway.

Re: The Sheffieldshire thread
Meersbrook Park is famous for its panoramic view of central Sheffield.
Park Grange Road, near Norfolk Park, also has an epic view of the city, although it's a bit rough round there and I'm not sure what parking opportunities it offers.
Park Hill, behind the railway station has a panoramic view of the city centre, especially at the junction of South Street and Shrewsbury Road. It also has an open air amphitheatre from which one may view the vista.
The bus terminus on Raeburn Road, just outside the entrance to Herdings Park, has a very 3D view of the city, from which many tower blocks, hills and valleys can be seen.

PS, if you visit Meersbrook Park, try to access it from the top end, as it's very very steep and, if you enter via the bottom end, you face a climb that Sherpa Tensing would fear.

Thinking about it, you could do the bus terminus on Raeburn Road and Meersbrook Park, as they're both in sort of the same direction as each other, and not that far apart. One gives a view of the city centre, while the other gives a broader view of the city.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm about to look all these up and put together an itinerary of sorts. Thunderstorms are predicted everywhere tomorrow (Sunday).

Oh yes, Park Grange Road. I think there were once tower blocks there which would have been more exciting. Though watching a tram climb that hill would be quite interesting!

Oh wow. I just cheated and had a look on Street View at Shrewsbury Road and South Street. I'd actually been tempted to have a drive round the legendary Park Hill flats - I've always wanted to have a closer inspection. I guess Google Street View mostly takes care of that sort of thing these days, but there's nothing quite like seeing these things with one's own eyes.

Re: The Sheffieldshire thread
In the old days, you could drive vehicles on the landings of the flats.
Admittedly, this was mostly reserved for milk floats and those little electric road sweeper van things.
I think Buttertubs should make an attempt to see if it's still possible.

I'd be more worried about being dragged out his fancypants car everything stolen and him being B*ggered to death by the locals.

Re: The Sheffieldshire thread
I've had a brief tour of the Titanic Sheffield this evening! I visited both Meersbrook Park AND sat in the sun at that amphitheatre by the Park Hill flats. My itinerary was downscaled as I set out much later than expected, so my scenic trip across the Pennines got ditched.
The view from Meersbrook Park really is epic. The city feels much closer than it does on the Google Street View pictures. That really is the steepest park I've ever seen! I entered at the top of of the hill - parked in... Norton Lees Road - so didn't have to do any climbing. I briefly sat on a bench and took a handful of photos on my phone.
I then moved on towards Park Hill. The sat nav took me the weirdest way - lots of left and right hand turns - up and down suburban hills - and I eventually ended up in... Norfolk Road where I parked. I'm not sure a hot and sunny Sunday evening was the best time to visit as there was some sort of gathering of people in loud cars at the top, but once I descended the steps to the amphitheatre it was quite nice and people were sitting around in the sun chatting, looking at the their phones etc. Great view again - I saw Sheffield United's ground! It's white lettering informing me of what it was. What I think is Sheffield's new tall building is quite impressive too.
I was there for about 15 minutes before returning to my car and I then had a drive round the flats. I went right in the middle of them. I knew they'd been done up, if not gentrified in recent years, so they'd be a lot more pleasant than they used to be, but parts are still derelict and fenced off, which I was slightly more interested in. I didn't see any milk floats!
I then headed on my way north and ended up at the M1 junction right next to Meadowhall - and I saw the famous Tinsley viaduct two level carriageway thing up ahead so I knew where I was then!
And that was my very brief Sunday evening whistle stop tour of Sheffield.

Well done Butters. Many of us have watched in fear from the safety of orbit the Tinsley viaduct, but you have dared to land on the planet's surface.

Yes. The lure was strong and I eventually gave in!
Much like Spaghetti Junction, you don't get a "feel" of the Tinsley Viaduct when you drive over it, but is best viewed from a different angle to fully appreciate its uniqueness.
I forgot to mention that my drive to Sheffield took me past Chesterfield's church with the twisted spire, which really is worth seeing to be believed. It is easily observed from the dual carriageway bypass.
