Re: The waiting in thread
OK, the official waiting in appeared to have ended earlier on when my new book was delivered.
Described as used but in excellent condition, it was anything but.
Spine split in multiple places (creating a concertina effect).
Cover badly scuffed, crumpled and dog-eared.
Edges of pages filthy from 'thumbing'.
A sticker crudely - and mostly unsuccessfully - torn off the back cover.
And!
Worst and most despicable of all, something had been spilt (and only partially cleaned off) over the book, covering the front cover, spine and even leaking onto and inside the pages.
It was appeared to be...
Oxtail soup?
Blood?
Something worse?
I'm livid.
It's so horrid that I had to put the 'thing' to one side and go and wash my hands after handling it.
By God, the feedback I gave them with my refund request was withering.

I've now ordered a brand new copy from Azamon.
I am now officially waiting in again.

Re: The waiting in thread
Monorail records have sent my order to someone else, that means I'm now waiting in for someone else's stuff.

Re: The waiting in thread
For the first time in many days, I'm not waiting in for anything. Everything I ordered has arrived.

It's about ex-pats in Jeddah.
Isolation, paranoia, claustrophobia...
I noticed that you'd been to that repulsive country on the map you made.
You might relate to it.

This is like pulling teeth. What are the highlights?
I have been, twice. It is a disturbing place. I find all death penalty states disturbing - paranoia seems rational to such explicit threat. However, I think I've said before - I find Arabic countries to be very warm and sensual at heart, with a pragmatic if discreet appreciation of nuance. They're further ahead than we were at a similar stage of development, and like Spain and Portugal the leap from fanatically religious to being liberal societies isn't nearly as huge.

Re: The waiting in thread
Also, I'm a great believer in the school of international relations that individual countries have a definable psychological personality and specific traits, having themselves gone through many of the same stages of development that humans and kinship networks go through.
Further, human societies seem to pretty much mirror each other in having let's say a fifth to a quarter of the population who are psychopaths out to do maximum harm in service of profit or zealotry or both, another fifth to a quarter who are the polar opposite, and a larger bulk in the middle who just want an easy life within the broadest confines of whichever section has power.
Thus, I reject the premise that particular Arabic cultures are uniquely bad, although the systems of government within some certainly can easily match the worst the world offers.

Waiting for Dynorod to come round, booked an 8AM to 1PM slot.
Hope they come soon because when the kids get back from work there will be about 19 cars on the drive.
