Re: The all-new all things driving thread
My car only gets washed once or twice a year when it gets its MOT or service and included complimentary wash - it always comes back sparkling, then the rain does the job for the rest of the year.
In 25 years of driving I've never handwashed my car and have only been to a carwash a handful of times (before selling/trading in), saving I don't know how much money, but quite a lot.
EDIT: I do remember me and my dad once washing my first car with sponges and a hosepipe but it all just seemed pointless and a big hassle to me and I never did it again, other than the occasional wipe of a window or number plate when filthy.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
My maths isn't the gr8est but with a bit of help:
25 years = 1,303 weeks
Assuming some people get a £5 basic carwash every week (others washes cost much more I believe):
1,303 x £5 = £6,515 - a car's worth saved!

I'm similarly car-washing-sceptic. I keep the number plates clean, and I wash off any bird crap because I've been told it's acidic and corrodes the paint.

Once again I shall be driving from Glasgow to Essex today. My choice of W-E route is... the A66.

I bought one of those air pump things that plug into the cigarette lighter hole, I got fed up of those foot-pumps things, how you supposed to read the needle when it's jumping around like a jack rabbit?
And no more 50p rip off at the garage.

They are great. A neighbour gave me hers when she got rid of her car.

My car is washed, waxed, and polished, and everything else. I insist on it. It lives under cotton dust sheets. The chrome must be creamed to a blinding mirror like sheen. The seats must be treated. The carpet is vacuumed and scented. The bodywork must gleam. I can’t have a speck of dirt on any of the windows. I just don’t do it myself.
When I parked my own vehicle on the street, I was less of a tyrant because it’s much harder to keep sufficiently on top of things. Now we have a communal run around for several of us in the building, someone takes it to a drive thru wash place, so it’s usually in fairly respectable condition, although if it’s between washes I can live with it.

That's an awful lot of time and money to spend on a purple 1996 Nissan Micra.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
My trip went well, despite delays at the A1 roadworks I was at Cambridge Services inside 7 hours. That's the benefit of starting from East Kilbride and so not having to circumnavigate most of Glasgow.
Interestingly that's the sort of amount I too would consider to the the price of a car. More precisely, that's the amount I've got saved up to buy a replacement when mine gets tired out from driving up and down the island.

I wish it was. I think it’s lovely. I’ve never seen a Nissan of that shade before.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
A girl who I fancied the p*nts off when I was at art school had one.
However, her's had body coloured bumpers and trim, which just set her head and shoulders above the other purple Nissan Micra owners rabble.
She drove me about on several occasions back in the day.
Waggy - what a 'big teaser'.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
Oh, that pavement parking has given me flashbacks to the House of Gloom.
