Re: The all-new all things driving thread
I am once again in Darlington. I had to stop at Birchanger services on the M11 to turn the traffic map on my mobile phone on. Don't ever go there, it's full of traffic jams and bad temper.

I've never heard of Birchanger services. But then I've never been on the M11.

Awful pokey little service area on a junction roundabout that's already overloaded with traffic. I think I preferred the M11 when it just had signs grimly declaring No Services on Motorway.
The M11 sucks, it's 2 lanes most of the way so you constantly get stuck behind lorries overtaking each other.
Junction 9 has a semi-permanent traffic jam because too much traffic is joining from the A14.
And there's a 15 mile stretch between two of the junctions so you can't escape the traffic once you're on there. That's why I had to stop to look at the traffic map, to see if it was safe to enter the zone.

I took the A696/A68 route north. Whoever told me it was a fine modern A-road with overtaking lanes was either lying, or had only tried the last 15 miles north of Lauder. Because the first 71 miles were unreformed cross-country A-road.
Luckily I didn't get stuck behind anything, and was eventually rewarded with a fine view of Edinburgh.

I've done the one that goes through Coldstream at silly o'clock at night, wouldn't recommend.

It's back to the A66 or A69 for me in future.

There's been too much driving going on recently for my tastes.

Sorry, but I'm a digital nomad, and travelling is an inseparable part of that.

Re: The all-new all things driving thread
Just now I randomly remembered that last time I was on the M11, I saw a car up ahead stopped on the hard shoulder. When I got closer, I could see the driver standing on the bank, brazenly w*eing into a field. He'd made a token effort to turn his back to the traffic, but the copious stream was plain to see.
