The A1 was blocked again on my way south yesterday, at Newark this time. I had to detour around on the A17 and then take the A607 south towards Grantham.

I wasn't relishing the prospect of going through Grantham's horrid gyratory system to get to the A1, but then what do I see but a direction sign for Gonersby festooned with no-lorries and weight limit signs. And that only means one thing, HANDY SHORT CUT.

Knowing that there's an A1 junction at Gonersby Moor, I took same short cut and found myself once again going south on the A1.

I've been across the Pennines on the M62 east to west today. I'd been across west to east about 10 years ago.

I saw the infamous farmhouse in between the carriageways! But in that direction you only see the rear of the house and it's not quite so visible as there's loads of leylandii trees blocking the view.

It really is quite an epic motorway drive. I noticed how much my ears kept popping as I ascended the Pennines, taking in the views of reservoirs, hills and moorland. I stopped at a little car park at the top just off the motorway junction, which afforded views towards the skyline of Manchester on the horizon. banana bones

I don't like the M62, I always get stuck in traffic there. And some of the farmers have put up loads of advertising boards by the side of the road, it's almost as bad as Spam Alley on the M6 (J16-J17).

I noticed those advertising boards - some are lorry trailers with adverts stuck on the side of them dumped in fields adjacent to the motorway. One just had giant Arabic writing on it.

I hate them. I annotate my strip maps with their locations, so I can be ready to avoid looking at them.

Yesterday afternoon I was thinking about my previous post when I realised I was driving on the M62 at that very moment. It was the eastern part beyond the A1(M), that goes on to Immingham and such places. It has quite a different character from the more familiar western bit. All flat farmland rather than moors and sheep and impressively high footbridges.

Well I never. It's not a footbridge at all.

There IS actually a footbridge nearby on the M62 - it serves the actual Pennine Way footpath!

It does look a bit like a giant dinosaur or something.

It is bleak, but one side of the bleakness is Leeds and Bradford and the other side is Manchester.

I must have seen both bridges, and mixed them up, assigning the footbridge to the more impressive one.

There's an unusually high footbridge on the M18, I was trying to find it on google surveillance view yesterday, but couldn't.

I paid £4 today for six minutes on the jetwash at the BP garage, rendering my car sparkling clean again.

YouTube has just recommended this video to me.

It had better be interesting. Colbert
