My work cellmate is drinking a bottle of alcohol-free cider.

I'd heard that people had begun enjoying 0% beers and ciders at work. But it's a bit unsettling to see it. It's made me really want some nice 12% wine right now.

Ooh, that wouldn't be right. Not at work.

I was surprised by how much it unsettled me. It took me out of 'thinking about work' mode and temporarily into 'thinking about wine' mode. I had to chatter brightly to cover up my discomfiture.

My friend and I had 3 bottles of wine between us on Friday night. We discovered that she drinks twice as much as me, but half as often, which is great, cos it means each of us can continue to have the other as the friend who drinks more than us.

After that one pint of 3.1% beer last thursday, I'm cracked open the bottle of red wine I've been saving for a special occasion.

No reason.

I only drink on bank holidays, as I don't like the taste of alcohol and I don't like feeling dizzy but I do feel I should do something to mark the fact it's a holiday.

Are you all stocked up? I'm the opposite I must say. I love my sleeping pills so much I take them in the living room to fully enjoy the woozy sensation and misjudging the door frame on the way to bed. Best washed down with a rich and heavy Shiraz.

Only the documentary earlier this year reminded me that Michael Jackson used to have a general anaesthetic in the evening. That is my absolute dream. I can't imagine anything lovelier than settling into bed while a nice man with great teeth pulls a belt round my arm and tells me to count back from 10.

The last time I had general anaesthesia I was annoyed to find that they didn't do the countdown. Instead she asked me where I might go on holiday that year, and I'd just started talking about Ireland, specifically Cork, when everything went black.
