Re: The alcohol thread
Once again it's Anticlimax Night, that sad occasion where it's 'gin today' but not 'gin tomorrow' (or the day after).

Re: The alcohol thread
I was at Waitrose at 8am sharp when they opened, to get the Christmas wine.
I got a can of Camden IPA (£2) and a bottle of Petit Chablis for today (£12), a bottle of Meursault for me on Christmas Eve (£36) and a bottle of Montrachet for family Christmas dinner (£59).
That's £109, probably the most I've ever spent on drink in one go.
As a magnificent gesture of excess I also bought a tin of posh sardines for £1.40.

I've spent more on that on one bottle.

Re: The alcohol thread
May I ask what it was?
My record single bottle price is £59.

Re: The alcohol thread
Actually, was it a half bottle?
I can't seem to remember now, for some reason…

Re: The alcohol thread
Ooh, fine-champagne, as mentioned in The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Re: The alcohol thread
I don't think I've spent more than £20 on wine, I've tried expensiveish stuff, and didn't like it any more than cheap stuff.

Re: The alcohol thread
The Meursault is lovely delicate stuff, but whether it's worth 3x as much as Chablis I'm not sure.
The Montrachet tastes like flowers and gold, like I imagine the drink Gildor Inglorion gave the hobbits must have tasted. Very soon it has me laughing and snapping my fingers at rain and Black Riders. I don't mind forking out half anhour's pay for that experience.

Re: The alcohol thread
Sorry, that should be half a day's pay.
Anyway, I'm not lending you £5 just so you can blow it on guitars and canary food.

Re: The alcohol thread
I've got enough booze in the house to get completely drunk 9 nights in a row.
Viña Sol, Meersault, Montrachet, Bombay Sapphire and two bottles of dry sherry.

Re: The alcohol thread
I got on the sherry at 11am, had smoked salmon sandwiches at 4 and have just finished the 3rd glass of Chablis·
Sometimes I think about just not drinking the 4th and final glass, because I never enjoy it. But that would lead me into a situation where I felt the same about the 3rd glass, and eventually I'd end up not drinking at all.
And then where would I be?

Re: The alcohol thread
I've just knocked over my last glass of gin, it's put a cloud on the end of the evening.
However I am now able to confirm that Bombay Sapphire spilt on polished wooden flooroards and wiped up is an effective, if expensive, cleaning agent.
Thank goodness the rest of the litre I bought this morning is safely 15 minutes' walk away in my storage unit. Cos I'll just go to bed now, instead of having more gin, like I would've if I'd brought the whole bottle home.

Sorry, Countess, there's no sugar-coating that tragedy.

Re: The alcohol thread
I shall have an extra half glass tonight to compensate myself.
That storage unit idea was a stroke of genius though, even if I do say so myself.

Re: The alcohol thread
When I haven't had beer for weeks, and then have beer, it's the most delicious thing in the world. It reminds me of having crisps and a sip of my parents' beer in a pub beer garden circa 1978.
