Fell asleep on the sofa. Woke up at 8'o'clock. Thinking it was Saturday night, I went to bed congratulating myself on being tired enough to enjoy a very early night. I've now realised it's actually Sunday morning.

That's how Winston Smith gets caught in 1984.

It'll be one of those fancy UPVC ones, with the complicated locking system, I'll be bound.

It'll be one of those fancy UPVC ones with the letter box right at the bottom to make all 100,000 postal workers in the UK hate you, I'll be bound.

With a letterbox flap on the outside and another one on the inside and all that brush-like material inside it, which means leaflets never get properly pushed through your letterbox.

I received a call today from the council's contractors, explaining, in somewhat nebulous fashion, that this one will appear identical to the original, but will be a genuine 'fire door'.
This, I hope, will mean that it is constantly ablaze.

Every new front door these days seems to have a handle on the front so you can't lock yourself out. But you can forget to lock the door on your way somewhere. Gone are the days when it was only a keyhole on the front.

Re: What's happening in your life? Part 2
Those handle front doors are so confusing. And they all work on different combinations of moves, like turning the handle upwards/downwards while turning/not turning the key.
I much prefer the old 'trapdoor function' lock-yourself-out doors.

I was just fast forwarding a fair bit through a YouTube video, and I could suddenly hear my dad's voice in the back of my mind saying "Don't have it on fast forward for too long otherwise you might wear out the heads".
What did this even mean?! And why did this outdated request come back to me after about 35 years whilst using such modern technology?!

Y'know, the heads.

Re: What's happening in your life? Part 2
He meant the heads in the video player, the ones that pick up the information off the tape.
Presumably it was the 'preview' fast forward mode, where you can see the picture, that he was concerned about. He thought the fast-moving tape would wear the heads out?

Yes, I seem to remember our old 80s video player's on-screen fast forward/rewind function was called "picture search". I felt it was almost illegal to have it on "picture search" for longer than about 20 seconds - and yesterday even a YouTube video - lest those "heads" be worn out.

Re: What's happening in your life? Part 2
And my next door neighbours are doing major works to their flat.
It involves the usual stuff - hammering, drilling etc - but in this solid concrete structure it's truly hellish.
I've never experienced anything quite so brutally intrusive and upsetting noise-wise.
When the drill first went off yesterday morning at just after 8am I thought I was going to have a heart attack.
My bed was violently vibrating - and not in a good way.
I genuinely think that the noise is worse in the Mini Bijou Flatlet than it is in the flat where the work's being done.
