But this new format is a big nothing really, it's like a return back to the late 70s where they had little interviews and the presenters were given longer to ramble on a bit, and the change is no bigger from when they used to change things around to have the breakers added or the album run down dunno

This is true. They'd been messing around with the format for years on and off, with some aspects dropped after a handful of weeks - only this one kind of stuck, though itself tweaked over time.
